Das Glasgeländer muss nicht transparent sein. Die Folienschichten zwischen den Scheiben können eingefärbt, auf Grafikelemente gedruckt oder mit LEDs hergestellt werden. Diejenigen, die befürchten, dass das außen montierte Glasgeländer schnell verschmutzt, können Glas mit einer selbstreinigenden Beschichtung verwenden. Darauf zersetzen sich organische Schadstoffe und reagieren mit UV-Strahlen. Diese Beschichtung erhält unter Lichteinwirkung auch hydrophile Eigenschaften – Wasser sammelt sich nicht an, sondern fließt nur an der Oberfläche ab und spült gleichzeitig Verunreinigungen ab.
